Drones for Chavez

Venezuelan president Hugo Chavez is working on a surveillance drone program – non-lethal for now – with help from Iran. That’s something that may give ardent drone supporters a moment of pause, but the US has shown the way on this and you can’t blame other countries for jumping on board after hearing so many great things. Chavez is the star of his own reality/propaganda show, “Alo Presidente“, where he routinely seizes private capital on live television. It’s not hard to imagine drones giving viewers at home an exciting aerial view of the action.

The UN says America’s rampant and expansive use of drone attacks threaten international law and may constitute war crimes. It seems to be only a matter of time before other countries are drone-killing threats to their security, real or imagined, which will be around the same time the West starts to wonder if this was such a great idea after all.
